(Tea Party 247) – According to a report from Newswars, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believes that a premature exit of the United States military from the country of Afghanistan could be disastrous, in a statement he released on Monday.
Early on Monday, media outlets reported that the Department of Defense was eagerly anticipating some sort of order to come down from the White House this week that would reduce the number of troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq by half in the month of January.
“The consequences of a premature American exit would likely be even worse than President Obama’s withdrawal from Iraq in 2011, which fueled the rise of ISIS [Islamic State terror group, banned in Russia] and a new round of global terrorism. It would be reminiscent of the humiliating American departure from Saigon in 1975,” McConnell said on Monday.
The Kentucky senator went on to claim that a retreat by the United States would end up destroying years of human rights accomplishments, embolden terrorists in the Taliban, and would be considered a huge win for those that the U.S. has called “bad actors” in the region, including the nation of Iran.
McConnell also said that former U.S. officials would see the pulling of the troops as “a symbol of US defeat and humiliation and of victory for Islamist extremism.”
In the first part of November, then-Defense Secretary Mike Esper sent out a classified memo to the White House warning that a fast and sloppy withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan was a bad idea.
President Trump tweeted in October that all U.S. troops would be brought home in time for Christmas. However, the tweet was disavowed by U.S. National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien who said that thousands of troops were going to remain in the country until sometime in early 2021.
Ever since his first campaign, Trump has pledged to bring an end to the longest war in the history of our country. Once the Trump administration reached a deal with the Taliban in February of this year, the number of troops was reduced to 8,600 in July. Another 4,000 of them were expected to leave in the fall.
The number of troops in Afghanistan could be reduced to 2,500 by early next year.
Folks, this is probably a bad idea. However, you can’t blame Trump for wanting to bring our boys home. However, the main problem with the war in Afghanistan is that we never allowed our military to finish the job and end the radical Islamic threat permanently.
It’s a real mess and there’s no easy solution that will make everyone happy.
